Rex Heuermann Admits to Being the Long Island Serial Killer After Years of Denial
• 13 minFor years, the Long Island Serial Killer case remained one of the most disturbing unsolved mysteries in modern American crime. Between 1993 and 2010, the remains of multiple women were discovered along Ocean Parkway in Long Island, New York. The case went cold for over a decade, with investigators struggling to identify a suspect despite clear patterns emerging across the victims.That changed in 2023 with the arrest of Manhattan architect Rex Heuermann. Prosecutors allege that DNA evidence, phone records, witness descriptions, and a pattern of digital behavior all connected him to the murders of multiple women, including Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello. A key breakthrough came from forensic genealogy and DNA recovered from discarded evidence, which ultimately led investigators to Heuermann’s doorstep. Inside his home, authorities also reportedly discovered disturbing materials and documents that they say outlined methods consistent with how the victims were killed and disposed of.In a major development, Heuermann later pleaded guilty to the murders of seven women and admitted responsibility for an eighth victim, while also agreeing to cooperate with the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit. Investigators hope his cooperation will shed light on his motivations, methods, and possible additional victims. Though he claims responsibility only for the known cases, prosecutors say the investigation remains open. With his guilty plea, one of the most infamous serial killer cases in U.S. history may finally be reaching its conclusion.
