South Asian Mental Health with Zara Khan, NCC

• 40 min

Amanda and Fern interview one of our therapists, Zara and she shares about her experience and expertise as a South Asian woman and therapist. She shares with us how mental health is still very stigmatized in Pakistan (where she grew up) and in other countries in South Asia. She shares how valuable it was for her to have a therapist with the same culture and the importance of women of color to be able to see a therapist of color. We discuss the intricacies of culture and how it can show up in the therapy room as well as how some people are not able to access therapy if they cannot find a therapist who speaks the same language as them. We discuss common struggles Zara sees in her work with immigrants and first generation clients, and how our family history impacts us through generations. Zara is currently taking new clients at Therapy for Women in our Philadelphia offices and virtually if you live in PA.
