What Noise Level Harms Productivity

• 2 min

Noise is a secret killer of performance. A mere 10db noise increase (e.g. going from a dishwasher to a vacuum cleaner) drops productivity by 5%. But most people don't notice because it impacts cognition, not effort. Also, noise is greater in poorer neighborhoods. This is from noise and productivity research published February 25, 2020 by Joshua T Dean from University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Garden equipment engines were completely unregulated with respect to emissions until the late 1990s and still emit high levels of carbon monoxide, volatile organic compounds, and nitrogen oxides. In fact, gas mowers and their relatives like leaf blowers and edgers produce 5% of the air pollution in this country. If you can help reduce noise pollution from lawn equipment, especially unnecessary leaf blowers, your neighbors would be grateful. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
