The death of her husband after battling lung cancer for five months brought a double dose of grief into her life: Her kids were grown-ups and had their own lives; they didn't "need her" anymore. Suddenly, her purpose for many years, being a wife and a mother, made no sense—she was alone, and her nest was empty.
